Mantripragada and Casanova Named First Team All-SCIAC, Ing Earns Award of Distinction

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. — The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) released its 2023 Men's Soccer All-Conference Awards on Wednesday, naming Caltech sophomores Ishaan Mantripragada and Etienne Casanova to First Team All-SCIAC and senior Derek Ing to the Award of Distinction.

This is the second straight year of First Team All-SCIAC recognition for Mantripragada; in 2022, the talented forward was the only rookie in the conference to be named to the top team.

Mantripragada continued his commanding collegiate career as he registered a phenomenal 2023 campaign, finishing the year with the most goals scored in conference play (ten) among all players in the SCIAC. The standout's goal total is two more than the next highest goal-scorer.

The striker also finished the year with the most points in conference play (22) as he added two assists on top of his ten goals. The Saratoga native beat out the next-highest player in the conference by three whole points.

Like Mantripragada, Casanova also nabs All-SCIAC for the second straight season; last year, the midfielder was named SCIAC Newcomer of the Year while also being named to the Second Team.

Casanova continued to dominate in 2023, ending the season tied for first in conference play for assists, with five. The San Jose native also tied the program's single-season assists record, set by Mantripragada one year ago.

Mantripragada and Casanova tied for second in the conference in goals when including both conference and non-conference games; each player scored 11 on the year.

Ing, one of seven seniors on the squad, earned the conference's coveted Men's Soccer Award of Distinction, which recognizes a senior for "exemplary achievements through their higher education experience — specifically for making significant contributions representing their school and serving their communities."

The veteran will graduate Caltech after serving as a two-year captain who stepped into the starting role his first day on campus. An Academic All-District selection, Ing has served as a data science consultant assisting Caltech astronomy professors with their research; he additionally has spent 12 weeks as an Amazon summer intern. This season, he saved 36 shots and notched three wins in net; he logged just over 761 minutes in goal.

With three first-year goalkeepers joining the team this season, Ing took on an even greater leadership and mentorship role in his final year as he prepared them to be the future of the program.

The awards are well-deserved for Mantripragada, Casanova and Ing, who all helped lead the squad to one of its most successful seasons in the history of the program. The squad finished the year with six massive wins — including three over SCIAC opponents — on top of four impressive draws.

Head coach Duncan Gillis expressed joy with his three players receiving the awards.

"I'm very happy for our team and our boys to be getting some well-earned recognition from the conference," said Gillis.

"Derek has been a tremendous leader for our team for multiple years and is a great representative of what we want our student-athletes to aspire to, on and off the field," he said.

"Ishaan and Etienne both had outstanding years," said Gillis. "Ishaan led the SCIAC in conference goals, coming up with some very important ones all season long, and Etienne also consistently came through with big goals and assists, tying Ishaan's single season assist record from last year," he said.

"I'm very proud not only of these three guys, but also of our whole team for a strong season and providing a good platform for these guys to shine."

The team will now rest and recover before returning to the pitch in 2024.
