PASADENA, Calif. — After posting its most successful season of competition in over thirty years, the Caltech men's soccer team will add nine newcomers to the roster this fall.
The squad will look to improve upon their historic 2022 campaign, which saw them earn three tough wins, including one over San Diego Christian and two over La Verne. The group also earned a pair of draws, with one against Whittier and the other versus the eventual SCIAC-champion Chapman Panthers.
Riley Coover
Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte
Club: LaMorinda MLS Next
Coover brings an impressive set of defensive skills that will elevate the Beavers' backfield.
"Riley is a very strong and smart defender," said Gillis. "He's aggressive, reads the game well, and he's very good on the ball in possession as well."
Alex Crowley
Atlanta, Ga. / Paideia
Club: Inter Atlanta National League
Crowley comes to Pasadena with quick reflexes and excellent hands in net.
"Alex is one of our incoming keepers who will give us a great amount of talent at the position," said Gillis. "With his athleticism and shot-stopping, we're very excited to see him competing with our other goalkeepers."
Ethan Feng
San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook
Club: Sporting San Jose ECNL
Feng brings a slew of abilities to the field, playing primarily as a defensive midfielder.
"Ethan has a lot of great qualities for a defensive midfielder," said Gillis. "He covers a lot of ground, puts in strong tackles, and has a good range of passing."
Ethan Hamel
Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside
Club: MVLA ECNL
Hamel comes to the Institute with a plethora of skills at goalkeeper, including a strong ability to block and move efficiently.
"Another one of our talented incoming keepers, Ethan's communication and ability with the ball at his feet are qualities that will ensure he can compete right away," said Gillis.
Aaron Henslovitz
Livingston, Calif. / Livingston
Club: STA ECNL
Henslovitz comes to Caltech with the massively important skill of elevating his teammates and moving the ball as needed.
"Aaron is an outstanding outside back who can play on either side, and can contribute going forward as well. His versatility and two-way play will be a great addition to our team."
John Ivanov
Mission Viejo, CA / Tesoro
Club: West Coast FC
Another multi-faceted player, Ivanov joins the roster with the ability to create offense and limit opponents.
"John is a skilled and versatile midfielder who can play in multiple different roles. He's capable of creating chances going forward but has a tremendous work rate defensively as well."
Bryan Kim
Los Altos, CA / Mountain View
Club: MVLA ECNL
One of two recruits from MVLA ECNL, Kim will bring the ability to play multiple positions in the back line.
"Bryan is another strong defender who has the quality to compete in the SCIAC right away," said Gillis. "He has the qualities to play either center back or outside back, and make an impact at either position."
Sam Matthews
Pepper Pike, OH. / University
Club: FC Evolution / White Caps FC
Matthews will join the goalie room at Caltech, bringing smarts, skills and experience.
"Another strong goalkeeper who I can't wait to see competing with the rest of our talented group," said Gillis. "Sam is confident off his line, sound technically, and helps lead from the back."
Tanish Rao
Sunnyvale, Calif. / Bellarmine Prep
Club: De Anza Force
A multitalented player in the midfield, Rao comes to the pitch with impressive championship pedigree.
"Another skilled and versatile midfielder, Tanish brings technical ability and leadership to our squad after helping lead his team to a NorCal state championship this year."
The group will hope to build on the major strides made in 2022 with the addition of these nine players. The first-years will join a solid group of returners as the Beavers will look to top last year's win total and make even more noise in the SCIAC.
