Caltech Women's Tennis Achieves ITA Academic Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Caltech women's tennis team earned 2023 Division III All-Academic Team honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Assocation (ITA) on Wednesday, with 10 of its players also achieving individual Scholar-Athlete recognition.

The squad was awarded team honors for earning a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.00 scale).

10 Beavers also earned individual Scholar-Athlete honors for each attaining a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year. Senior Nina Solovyeva along with juniors Beatriz Avila-Rimer, Teresa Huang, Athena Kolli, Emily Zhang, sophomores Anika Arora, Yoyo Benchetrit, Payal Patel, Grace Wilson and first-year Anna Szczuka achieved the distinction.

"I am extremely proud of our tennis program," said head coach Benay Weintraub on the awards. "It is quite an achievement to earn this prestigious honor and have our names shine brightly on such a selective list. Each student-athlete is dedicated to advancing in their respective STEM fields and it is exhilarating to witness these girls chase their dreams and inspire the next generation of STEM enthusiasts and tennis players."

"I know they will continue to excel in the classroom, on the tennis courts and in the local and global communities in which they positively impact," said Weintraub.

Both the team and individual awards required student-athletes to be listed on the institutional eligibility form; the team award required all varsity letter winners to be factored into the grade-point average for the current academic year.

In May, College Sports Communicators named Arora, Benchetrit, Solovyeva and Zhang to its 2023 Academic All-District Team.

The most recent awards from the ITA come after a successful season on the court for the Beavers, who under the leadership of Weintraub reached a Div. III national ranking of No. 16 in March before tying for the third-best record in the competitive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).
