GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Caltech baseball team received 2023-24 Team Academic Excellence Award honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) on Wednesday, the organization
announced.
The team earned the distinction for attaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) for the 2023-24 academic year.
The award comes after five Beavers achieved
Academic All-District status from College Sports Communicators this past June; senior
Leo Jenkins (New York, N.Y. / Beacon) along with juniors
Thorsen Kristufek (McKinney, Texas / McKinney),
Edward Speer (Austin, Texas / Leander),
Cameron McNamee (Great Falls, Mont. / Great Falls) and
Jack Fishel (Baltimore, Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland) collected the prestigious recognition for posting a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher while either competing in 90 percent of the team's games or starting in 66 percent of them. Institutions could nominate a maximum of five student-athletes.
On the field, it was a
historic year for head coach
Kevin Whitehead and the squad, who finished the spring with the program's highest win total in 64 years. Perhaps most notably, the squad nabbed a 5-2 win over MIT and a 4-3 win over Redlands among 10 total victories. At the individual level, sophomore right-handed pitcher
Brendan Flaherty (Narragansett, R.I. / Lake Forest Academy) cemented his name in the history books after breaking a host of school records, including single-season ERA (4.19), strikeouts thrown (82), opposing batting average (.262) and WHIP (1.31).
