Hall of Honor
A four-time West Region champion and NCAA qualifier, Boyce is the most decorated fencer in Caltech history. After competing as a Junior Olympian prior to enrolling at Caltech, he led the saber team to two regional titles while compiling a 167-3 record in NCAA and conference competition over his four-year career, which he highlighted with a pair of All-America honors for placing eighth (Second Team) and 10th (Third Team) as a junior and sophomore. His exploits earned him Caltech Outstanding Athlete recognition as a senior and he remains the only Beaver fencer to qualify for even three national championships.
Boyce graduated with dual degrees in biology and literature and has gone on to a distinguished career in paleobotany, having earned his doctorate from Harvard in 2001, serving on multiple committees and earning several awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 2013. He spent 10 years as an Associate Professor at the University of Chicago and currently holds the same position at Stanford University.
