A three-sport scholar-athlete during her time at Caltech, Zortman became the third female track & field scholar-athlete to compete at the NCAA National Championships, where she placed 14th in the javelin as a senior. She earned All-SCIAC honors both years on the team, placing third and fourth while also running key legs on relays that placed fourth, fifth and sixth at the SCIAC Championships. She still holds program records in the javelin, 100- and 200-meter dashes and led the Beavers to their highest point total at the SCIAC Championships in program history. Zortman, who was a member of the Wisconsin state champion softball team as a high school senior, began her career at Caltech as a two-year starter on the baseball team before joining track & field, in addition to playing three seasons of volleyball in which she ranked second on the team in all three attacking categories and blocks.
